Firstly a big thank you for all your support over the past 10 years.
Working with other groups we have now completed over 42,000 psa tests and the 796th cancer find has just arrived with David Baxter-Smith, our resident Urologist. I’ve no doubt that will rise to 800 in the next few days.
Looking forward, I’m sure that during 2015 we'll burst through the 50,000 tests and 1,000 cancer finds milestones. For sometime now Sue and I have been aware of the importance of monitoring psa "velocity" (rate of change) and this was recently reinforced by some leading lights from Australia, who are calling for all men over 50 to be regularly tested.
We're delighted to announce that we've now started computerising the 38,000 or so "green" results to help spot trends in individuals who've been back to us more than once and whilst each separate result may have been "green"they may have a relatively high percentage rate of change. If we can pick up on this early enough it could make a real difference to them. As I strongly believe in this I'm putting my money where my mouth is and plan to personally donate some £10,500 over the next 18 months or so. I've also applied to Prostate Cancer UK and others for funding to help with the work.
I'm delighted to announce that one of our regular testing nurses Wendy Hodgkinson will be joining us for around 16 hours a week from January to not only spearhead the computerisation project but also help bring together all strands of the Charities work including the testing events themselves. As a current GP practice nurse Wendy is ideally placed to fill this role and Sue and I are very much looking forward to working very closely with her.
Thanks to the very kind sponsorship of Clare Brown, the charity will also have the full time use of an office at 66B Smith Street Warwick CV34 4HU, on a completely free of charge basis for the foreseeable future. So a huge thank you to Clare. This will become the new address for the Charity and will enable us to offer testing by appointment in the office to supplement our usual sessions. It will also give us the opportunity to go into workplaces or similar venues and do 10/20 tests or whatever. I believe this is a very exciting development.
I have just published our planned psa events list for the first 4 months of next year. If you'd like to promote/support a small local event please don't hesitate to ring me on 07831 156071.
